Hold Second Free Prostate Cancer Screening Check

On Sunday 7th April Kingswinford & Stourbridge Lions Club held their second Free Prostate Cancer Screening Check at the Stourbridge Institute between 10.00am and 1.00pm.

The Screening Check, which offered a free PSA blood test * primarily to men over 50, was the culmination of months of planning and fundraising. For the previous 3 weeks The Lions have been publicising and inviting men to the screening through postal drops, posters in and around Stourbridge, a stand in the Ryemarket and promotion on the Bridge Radio.

Nearly 300 men turned up on the day to have a simple blood test. Consultant Surgeon Urologist Mr David Baxter-Smith was present to oversee the medical team of healthcare professionals who administered the blood tests and to answer any questions. He will also analyse the results and send out the results of the blood test.

Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer of men affecting 1 in 12 men. A man dies every 57minutes from Prostate Cancer in the UK. There is no perfect clinical test yet available to diagnose prostate cancer but the simple blood test Prostate Specific Antigen* (PSA), offered at the Screening Check, can act as an indicator of a prostate problem.

Kingswinford & Stourbridge Lions held their first Free PSA Screening Test in October 2011 where 462 men were tested and 42 had abnormal results. Again David Baxter-Smith was present at the event. He also analysed the results and contacted everyone with their results and gave further advice to those who were identified as having abnormal results.

Kingswinford & Stourbridge Lions are very proud to have been able to offer this life saving service to the local community and are planning further events over the next few months to increase awareness of Diabetes and to raise funds for Breast Cancer through a Pink Pamper Evening.
