Casino Night in Shirley funds Cancer Care

Back in October Shirley Lions held their annual Casino Night where around one hundred Lions, partners and friends enjoyed a great night of fun and fellowship gambling the night away.

Although most punters lost at the tables the event itself raised £1500 and at a recent club meeting Lion President Gillian Conlon was able to present a cheque for this sum to the nominated charity for the event – The Ian Edwards Cancer Break Trust.

The Trust was set up by friends and relations in memory of Ian, a care worker and true metal fan whose 10 month fight against lymphoma ended just before Christmas 2010, when he was aged 29. It aim is to help cancer patients, who have to spend long periods in hospital as inpatients receiving chemotherapy, get a holiday or short break with their family or friends anywhere they would like in the UK by providing funding to help pay certain overnight or travel costs.
