Ordinary People doing Amazing Things

Northampton Lions and Woodvale School

Early this year we received a request from a primary school in the east of Northampton, asking for our help. It was simple, they had 72 nursery children who wanted to go to Woburn Safari Park for their Family Day out, but couldn’t afford the transport; try as they could it just wasn’t going to happen! Being so little the children needed one to one accompaniment, normally a parent and that meant at least three coaches.

The Head of Nursery phoned and then wrote a request for help, Northampton Lions had helped before could they help again? After a phenomenally successful Christmas campaign we were ready to help and a partnership with the school was born.

Lion’s provided a cheque for £500 and the trip arranged. Simba the Lion went along to the school and presented the cheque, the picture printed in the Chronicle and Echo paper.

This started a partnership that has blossomed (quite literally) in the last few months. Two of our gardening Lions go and work with the Year 6 children every week, first weeding the planters, and then planting vegetables, in order that the children learn about the plants, care for them and eventually eat the fruits of their labours.

Northampton Lions now have a plan to work along side the school to do Assemblies and PSHE lessons in the next term, to help the children and parents understand what Lions do. The school want to use their Autumn disco to raise money for measles following a discussion with Lions about the measles initiative; and the school has agreed to forge links with the school nurse to work with pre school children about vaccinating the children against measles.

Simba and Northampton Lions will be going to the school’s Summer Fete at the end of June to show the parents and staff what Lions are like, and hand out some information leaflets. It’s amazing what we can do when we put our mind to it, because these children are the citizens of tomorrow, and who knows perhaps a Lions Young Ambassador of the future!
