Aldridge Stan Clark Trophy

In addition to the charitable donations made each year by the Aldridge & District Lions Club, several community events with local groups and schools are also undertaken. One such event is the annual Stan Clarke Memorial Trophy.

Stan Clarke was a member of the Aldridge & District Lions Club and despite some personal difficulties took a very active and involved role in the Club activities. In memory of Stan and the difficulties he endured, the Club have established a trophy in his name. The trophy is awarded to a child attending a school within the area who has shown “perseverance and achievement against adversity”

All schools are invited to forward a citation for one of their pupils for consideration for this award. This year the Club received two such citations which were duly submitted to the panel for review.

Aldridge Lions Club Youth Chairman, Mike Barker, said, “The cases put forward in both of the citations were considered to be most compelling and each argued a good case for awarding the trophy. As we found it most difficult to decide between the two pupils, we made a decision that for this year we would award the trophy jointly. Each school will hold the trophy for six months and each recipient will receive a replica trophy to keep permanently.”

The two pupils to receive the award for 2010 are Alina Muthuparakunnel (6) from St Mary of the Angels Catholic Primary School and Ben Sambrook (11) from Cooper Jordan CE Primary School.

Within the citation for Alina it states, “She has been diagnosed as having Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma and Congenital Hypothroidism and throughout her young life has spent many weeks in hospital. Despite this she is still an outstanding pupil and a credit to the school.”

Ben has suffered a Brain Tumour and his citation reads, “Ben has undergone 4 weeks of Radio Therapy and 6 months of Chemotherapy but despite this has not missed 1 single day at school.”

Both pupils received their awards from Lion Mike Barker during assembly at their schools.

In addition to helping over 40 charities at the annual Fayre, the Aldridge & District Lions Club donated in excess of £4,200 to more than 20 charitable and good causes during their 2008 /2009 year.
