Knowle and Dorridge Lions celebrated another year of record achievements on Thursday 23rd September, when the club held its annual presentation evening for sponsors at the Greswolde Hotel in Knowle.

‘Once again increased numbers of walkers, runners and cyclists have helped us raise a record £67,000 for charity over the past year’ said Past President Peter Smith. ‘This year our Festive Walk attracted more than 850 walkers to Baddesley Clinton House between Christmas and New Year who raised £6,800 between them. Our big fund raiser, the Knowle Fun Run, again netted over £40,000 with record support from sponsors and advertisers alike. Our other big money raiser is our Solihull Bikeathon from Packwood House which cleared over £15,000 for the first time, with 450 cyclists enjoying a sunny day out last July.’

Peter thanked all the sponsors saying, ‘It’s great for our club of 29 volunteers to celebrate such success again, but without help from companies like yourselves our events would never realise so much for charity. We sincerely hope that we can continue this level of fundraising with the help of all our generous sponsors again next year.’

On the evening the Lions presented cheques totalling almost £32,000 to their three nominated charities – Teenage Cancer Trust, Parkinson’s UK and fly2help.

Community Service Chairman Bob Thurtle explained that the Club retained a proportion of the funds raised for local causes explaining this had again been spent on coach outings and tea parties for older people and to benefit local children and disabled people. The Club had also responded to requests for funding from many local organisations, now listed on their website http://www.knowleanddorridgelions.com/where-the-money-goes.

Wilf Davey introduced former Arden school pupil Julia Shelley, one of 3 winners of the club’s Youth Travel Bursary this year, who has recently returned from dancing at the Edinburgh Festival. Julia gave an interesting illustrated insight into her experience and thanked the Lions for their generous Bursary.
