Dudley Lions celebrated World Sight Day with Cllr Peter Miller, the Mayor of Dudley. Assisted by the Beacon Centre for the Blind the Mayor was taken blindfolded through the streets of Dudley to a charity shop where he made an unforgettable purchase of a plate to commemorate the wedding of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson. With the assistance of the Lions and a cane with a rollerball on the end, he made his way back to the Council House.
When safely back in the Council House the Mayor and Mayoress experienced the effect of stoke, glaucoma, molecular degeneration and tunnel vision on the eyes with the use of a series of special goggles. He was of course also keen to view his prized purchase.
The Mayor commented that the cobblestone pavement and the van parked over the pavement proved extremely difficult. He has also been asked by local wheelchair users to remove kerbstones so that the pavement blended into the road. The blindfolded walk made him realise that whilst that may help wheelchair users it would not help those with visual impairment.
Dudley Lions would like to thank the Mayor of Dudley for his support of the event, and if a Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson plate should appear at one of your events, it is just possible that your life may have been touched by the Mayor of Dudley, who after all is also a Lion.
