Ordinary People doing Amazing Things

105M Convention at Warwick

Another convention has passed and it would appear that to many Lions in our District it is something that does not concern them. That is a shame, because not only is it the Annual General Meeting of Lions Clubs International in our District but it is a wonderful social occasion where you can meet old friends but make new ones as well.

Friday lunch, hosted by the Mayor of Warwick was the start of the weekend events. The District Governor, Lion Martin Bye, the 1st & 2nd Vice District Governors, Lions Neil Chisholm & Paul Anstice plus our International Visitor, Past International Director, Lion Scott Rennolls from America were all present and chatting with everyone in an informal setting.

Friday evening was a “Fancy Dress” event, some were dressed in excellent costumes and others were obviously the “downstairs” inhabitants. Everyone enjoyed excellent food and entertainment in “The Good Old Days” style. I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Saturday was the business of the weekend. There were elections for next year’s DG, 1st VDG & 2nd VDG. With only one candidate for each of the positions these went according to plan. Unfortunately we do not have the competition for these positions that we had a few years ago. The only resolution, which was to keep District Dues the same was passed. Competition winners were acknowledged by presentation of the appropriate trophies. It was exceedingly good news to hear that the winner of the Environmental Photograph Competition had gone on to win the Multiple District Competition.

Sadly we did not meet our Young Ambassador of the 21st Century as she was very ill with Glandular Fever, but she had written a speech which was read to us by Lion Heather Jeavons of Malvern Hills Lions Club, the sponsoring club. She sounded to be a very worthy winner.

The afternoon was rounded off by a rousing speech by PID Lion Scott. I had thought that perhaps I had had a long day and needed to rest, but I would not have missed his speech for anything. There were then presentations made to various Lions as thanks for all of their hard work and successes.

Saturday evening was the District Governors Banquet and Ball. Good food and good company, with some dancing by the young and energetic, provided a good ending to the day.

Sunday morning had PID Lion Scott answering questions put to him by quite a large number of Lions. Sadly they were the same faces that attend every year. Those of you who have never been, or have not been to Convention for a number of years, please come to next year’s Convention and make it a great time!
