Roy Darkin 40 Years Service

Roy Darkin has been a very active member of Wellesbourne & District lions and was instrumental in the very first club meeting.

Roy is our only current charter member and one of very few MJF's(Melvin Jones Fellow's) ever awarded to club members. His award was for outstanding services to the club, zone and district but most of all for his service in the local community.

Roy was manager of the local branch of Barclay's bank. Very much in the old style when there were real bank managers!! and members recall that the subject of the lions club was raised with all new customers. It was a standing joke that if you wanted to open an account in the village bank you needed to join Wellesbourne lions!!

Roy took part in a moped ride from the west coast to the east coast of England with another member, Dave Merrils, to raise alot of money through sponsership. He strongly supported the annual raft race and helped to take it up to a key event which in its hayday raised in excess of £40,000 per year for charities. One year in the mid 1980's, 350 teams entered and the event was shown on the BBC.

Congratulations Roy on your 40 years service.
