105M go QUACKERS part 1 Kenilworth

Here is how the Kenilworth Weekly News reported Kenilworth Lions annual Boxing Day extravaganza

“Gambling sorts and those with the need to get out of the house on Boxing Day gathered at Kenilworth's Ford for the annual Duck Race.

Hundreds flocked to the famous ford trying to get as near to the start as possible to see stacks of the little yellow plastic ducks released.

There was a sticky start to the event as deputy mayor Coun Richard Davies pulled the cord to release them - but nothing happened. A few minutes went by before fellow Lions descended into the cold water to sort the problem out.

Another tug on the cord and the ducks were swimming on Finham Brook and heading towards the finish at Abbey Fields.

Just four were needed to make it to the finish line with a prize of £100 for the first place winner. The first duck to make it was number 585. In second place it was 1027 which carries a £75 prize, third place was 847 with a £50 prize and fourth place was 221 with a prize of £25.

Afterwards fair rides and refreshments helped warm up the crowds and raise more money for the Lions' charities.

The event received a plug in national newspaper The Guardian. The paper named it as one the 'Five best...Boxing Day bashes'
