Lions Target Bowls

Market Harborough Lions Club organised its first Target Bowls fund raiser at the Harborough Leisure Centre on Thursday 12th February. This form of bowls is quite novel in that the target is the jack standing on a flat archery target. The aim is to land the bowl on the target which scores points as in archery. Teams have 20 minutes to continually bowl and score as many points as possible.

For this the first tournament 24 teams entered although, due to the snow, a few people were unable to attend. Teams were sponsored and the funds, expected to exceed £2,000, are to be donated to the Lions Charitable Trust. For this event, Market Harborough Lions nominated Cancer Research UK as its chosen charity and two thirds will be donated for research into Breast and Prostate cancers, the balance being used for the Lions regular charitable giving.

Prizes were presented, on the night, to the team which raised the highest amount of sponsorship; to the team with the highest points score, and also, kindly donated by Harborough Leisure Centre, to the two players with the highest individual sponsorship raised.

Fund Raising Chairman and organiser Lion Trevor Blythe said “We were very pleased to receive such strong support, from not only the bowlers of Market Harborough Indoor Bowls Club but also from non bowlers, and we are especially grateful to the Harborough Leisure Centre for their generous help. It is very rewarding to be able to donate these funds to Cancer Research UK"
